Google Patches 79 Chrome Security Flaws, 14 Critical

Posted on May 15, 2026 By CWS

Google has recently issued a significant security update for its Chrome browser, addressing 79 vulnerabilities to prevent potential exploitation by cybercriminals. Among these, 14 are deemed critical, emphasizing the urgency for users to update their browsers to avoid severe cyber threats.

Critical Security Update Details

The latest stable Chrome release updates the browser to version 148.0.7778.167/168 for Windows and Mac, with Linux users receiving version 148.0.7778.167. While Google plans to roll out this update gradually, users and IT administrators are encouraged to manually initiate the update process to protect their systems promptly.

This patch underscores the ongoing struggle against memory corruption vulnerabilities, such as “Use-after-free” (UAF) and “Heap buffer overflow” bugs, which are prevalent in complex browser architectures.

Security Flaws and Bug Bounties

To protect users, Google withholds specific exploit details temporarily, allowing time for users to apply the update before hackers can exploit these vulnerabilities. The company has rewarded independent researchers with substantial bug bounties, reflecting the seriousness of these security issues.

The highest bounty, amounting to $43,000, was awarded for identifying a critical heap buffer overflow in the WebML component, demonstrating Google’s commitment to incentivizing external contributions to their security efforts.

Breakdown of Notable Vulnerabilities

The update addresses multiple memory management issues that could enable attackers to execute malicious code via specially crafted HTML pages. Critical vulnerabilities include CVE-2026-8509 in WebML, CVE-2026-8510 in Skia, and several “Use-after-free” vulnerabilities across various components like UI, FileSystem, Input, Aura, and more.

Threat actors often exploit browser vulnerabilities to bypass security measures, extract sensitive information, and compromise operating systems. Delaying the installation of this update leaves your infrastructure vulnerable to such attacks.

How to Update Your Browser

To ensure your system is secure, follow these steps to update Chrome: Navigate to the three-dot menu at the top right corner, select Help, then About Google Chrome. Allow the browser to download and install the update automatically, and click Relaunch to implement the security fixes and reset active sessions.
