Google and Mozilla have launched new updates for their popular web browsers, Chrome and Firefox, addressing more than 200 security vulnerabilities. These updates are essential for maintaining the security and stability of the browsers used by millions worldwide.
Chrome’s Major Security Enhancements
The latest Chrome version 156 comes with fixes for 52 security issues, including four critical vulnerabilities. These critical issues involve memory corruption in FileSystem, improper input validation in FileAPI and Skia, and a use-after-free flaw in Layout.
Among these, the FileSystem vulnerability, identified as CVE-2026-118306, poses a significant threat as it can potentially allow code execution outside the sandbox via a specially crafted HTML page.
Additionally, Google has addressed 46 high-severity bugs, many of which relate to memory corruption and improper input validation. Despite these achievements, the company has not yet decided on the bug bounty rewards for researchers who reported these issues.
Firefox Patch Release Details
On the same day, Mozilla announced the release of Firefox 159, which resolves 167 security defects, including 108 high-severity vulnerabilities. The majority of these fixes target use-after-free issues.
Mozilla’s update also tackles various other security concerns, such as sandbox escape, privilege escalation, and same-origin policy bypass issues. This update is crucial for users to protect their systems from potential exploits.
Moreover, Mozilla has rolled out updates for Thunderbird 159 and 153.6, as well as Firefox ESR 153.6 and 115.44, offering patches for numerous vulnerabilities.
Security Recommendations and Outlook
Neither Google nor Mozilla have reported any known exploitation of these vulnerabilities in real-world scenarios. However, users are strongly advised to update their browsers immediately to safeguard against potential threats.
These updates underscore the continuous efforts by browser developers to enhance security and address emerging vulnerabilities promptly. As cyber threats evolve, timely updates and patches remain critical in protecting user data and privacy.
Both companies continue to monitor and improve their software, ensuring that users can browse the internet with confidence and security.
