Google has announced a significant update to its Chrome browser, addressing 382 security vulnerabilities in the newly released Chrome 151. The majority of these security issues were identified by Google’s own security team, underscoring the company’s commitment to maintaining robust browser security.
AI’s Role in Identifying Vulnerabilities
Of the vulnerabilities patched, an impressive 358 were discovered internally by Google. This surge in discoveries has been attributed to advancements in artificial intelligence, although Google has not disclosed the specific AI tools involved. The utilization of AI highlights the evolving strategies in cybersecurity detection and response.
Fifteen of the vulnerabilities were deemed ‘critical’, while 67 others were classified as ‘high severity’. The remaining issues were rated as ‘medium’ and ‘low’ severity, with 169 and 131 vulnerabilities, respectively. These classifications guide the urgency and priority of addressing each flaw.
Types of Vulnerabilities Addressed
The security flaws range from user-after-free, out-of-bounds errors, incorrect security interfaces, usage of uninitialized variables, type confusion, to insufficient input validation. Many of these issues impact the renderer process within the browser, which handles the execution of web content.
Such vulnerabilities could potentially be exploited by remote attackers through specially crafted web content, enabling them to execute arbitrary code within the renderer sandbox. In some scenarios, these exploits could allow attackers to escape the sandbox environment, posing a risk of executing code on the user’s system.
Current Exploit Status and Future Outlook
Google’s security advisory assures that there are no reports of these vulnerabilities being exploited in the wild. This proactive patching is crucial in preventing potential exploits. Earlier in the month, Google addressed a fifth zero-day vulnerability of 2026, reflecting its ongoing efforts to strengthen Chrome’s security.
