Google has issued the Android Security Bulletin for September 2026, tackling multiple critical vulnerabilities that could enable remote code execution on susceptible devices. The bulletin, released on September 8, highlights the importance of promptly installing the latest security updates provided by device manufacturers.

Critical Vulnerabilities Addressed

The update addresses several severe issues within the Android System component. These vulnerabilities pose significant risks as they allow remote code execution without requiring user interaction or additional execution privileges. Successful exploitation could result in malicious code execution on vulnerable devices without user awareness, emphasizing the urgency of the update.

The September patch resolves critical System RCE vulnerabilities identified as CVE-2026-28604, CVE-2026-28618, CVE-2026-28639, CVE-2026-28662, CVE-2026-49882, CVE-2026-49884, CVE-2026-49919, and CVE-2026-49921, affecting multiple Android versions including Android 14 through 17.

Kernel and Framework Vulnerabilities

A critical remote code execution vulnerability, CVE-2026-52993, has also been patched in the kernel component related to Transparent Inter-Process Communication. Kernel vulnerabilities are particularly concerning as they can grant attackers powerful control over the operating system.

Additionally, Google has addressed critical elevation-of-privilege flaws in System and Framework components, potentially allowing attackers with limited access to escalate permissions. These vulnerabilities could be exploited in combination with others to bypass security measures, access protected data, or disable security controls.

Additional Fixes and Recommendations

The update also addresses CVE-2026-49932, a critical denial-of-service issue, and extends coverage to Android TV, the Linux kernel, chipset components, and vendor-specific drivers with the 2026-09-05 patch level.

Google emphasizes the role of Google Play Protect in monitoring harmful applications, although it should not replace the importance of applying these security patches. Users are advised to ensure their devices are updated to the latest security patch levels, especially if installing apps from third-party sources.

To confirm protection, users can navigate to Settings, select Security and privacy, and check the Android security update level. Devices with the 2026-09-05 patch level include all applicable September fixes, while those with the 2026-09-01 level receive core updates.

Maintaining device security is crucial, and users are encouraged to stay informed about updates to protect against emerging threats.
